Hello, my name is Shayla Burns (Wilson). I am from a community located southwest of Riding Mountain called Keeseekoowenin First Nation. I moved to Peguis in 2017 and started working here at the daycare in 2018. I started as a CCA and then became classroom support. My new position as of July 2025 is the Supervisor of the daycare centre. I am looking forward to learning and gaining more experience in this position. I am currently taking ECE 2 through Red River College which is a blessing to be able to work and attend school. I have over 13 years of experience in working with children. I have also taken multiple ECE courses through ACC throughout my years of experience. Some things I like to do on my own time is spend time with my family, my husband Jonathan and two sons Maxwell and Kendrick. I like to go bike riding on our side by side with family and friends. I love to golf, one of my favorite things to do. I love listening to music, going camping and being by the lake. I like being outdoors and enjoy the fresh air.
Hello! My name is Krista Olson and I am the administrative assistant at the Peguis Free Spirits Child Care Centre. I returned to Peguis First Nation, 15 year ago, after living in British Columbia for most of my upbringing. In 2010, I upgraded my skills and attended the Red River Community College, Office Technician program that was held at Peguis which lead to my career path into office administration. I have worked at a few organizations such as Peguis Training & Employment, Peguis Central School and Peguis Development Corporation. When the opportunity arose to work at the Centre, I gladly applied. I have been a part of the Daycare team for almost 3 years now. I enjoy the work environment and being able to see the children who attend the Centre, grow and flourish into their own being has been remarkable. It is even more heartfelt when daycare children return to the Centre for work experience during summer employment, and you can remember moments of them being children within the Centre.

I worked as a cleaner when I first started here. Now I work in the kitchen. Starting in September, I will be working in the front office for two days out of the week. I am excited for that. I have seen a lot of children come as babies, leave here to go to nursery or kindergarten and now they are young adults! I love working here.
Hello, my name is Amanda Cameron. I have lived in Peguis with my family for 20 years, we have five children, my husband is from Peguis. My position is CCA, and I teach preschool school age children, help them learn basic skills in school readiness. In my classroom we as a group do many different activities through out the day, which I include free play outdoors every day, I like to help the children get into a daily routine. I believe in helping children respect to one another, I think its important for children to learn to show empathy for one another, helping hands in the classroom, helping them to learn in their environment with their social skills. Problem solving, and building relationships, I have been part of the daycare world for eight years and I enjoy what I do, I enjoy making children feel welcome and valued in my classroom, I am approachable, I appreciate and welcome parents to come visit us in our classroom anytime. Thank you for trusting in me and allowing me to care for your child in the coming year.
Hi. My name is Matthew Houston. I live in and grew up in Fisher River. My partner and I have a blended family of five with another baby girl on the way. I enjoy spending time with my partner and our children, traveling, going to the beach in the summer months, watching new and old movies, attending and supporting community events, and learning new things whether it be informational, factual or skillful. I started working at the Peguis Free Spirits Child Care Centre in the Sabe Room with the school age children last October and since then I have really enjoyed getting to know the children and staff. I am a big advocate in helping the children learn healthy social skills and behavior through outdoor play, social interaction, and repetitive direction. I like to encourage each child as much as possible to learn basic skills like how to put on their shoes and jackets (tying and zipping) themselves or with minimal assistance, classroom rules and boundaries, and the importance of showing kindness and generosity to one another. It is such a pleasure watching the children grow and learn throughout their time here and I feel fortunate to be a part of that. Last year the daycare had piloted the...
